Biography

Brian Coats is the Associate Vice President of Technology Operations and Planning at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.  He provides both strategic vision and operational direction as an executive member of the information technology leadership team for this $1.2 billion institution.

Dr. Coats is an instrumental free and forward-thinker promoting collaboration and innovation throughout the University of Maryland campus, often cutting across traditional practices to consider and create improvement and advancement.  For more than 20 years, Dr. Coats has gained extensive experience managing large enterprise systems and computing environments, developing IT strategy to align resources and services with organizational goals, ensuring and improving fiscal solvency, and fostering partnerships with internal departments as well as external agencies and institutions.  He is an active participant in a multitude of national organizations and workgroups related to security and privacy in information technology.   Dr. Coats' research on these areas along with governmental compliance of information security in healthcare has been published and presented both domestically and internationally.
