John Carpenter

Biography

John Carpenter serves as the Chief Technology Officer at the McDonough School of Business, a post he assumed in May 1994. Previously, as a Commander in the U.S. Navy he held positions in Information Technology as Chief Information Officer at the National Defense University and as Head, Office Systems Branch at the Navy Military Personnel Command in Washington DC. Carpenter served for 22 years as a U.S. Navy pilot with warfare specialties in Anti-Submarine Warfare, Computer Systems Management, and Naval Technical Intelligence. MSB maintains an independent Information technology staff at Georgetown providing “soup-to-nuts” IT services to 3,000+ students, faculty, and staff. During his time as CTO of the McDonough School Mr. Carpenter has coordinated IT support for the school during a period of significant increase in enrolment and reputation, culminating in the move two years ago into a new state-of the art Hariri Building in the center of the Georgetown Campus. Mr. Carpenter grew up as the son of a U.S. Navy pilot living in dozens of locations. He earned an undergraduate degree in Geology from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s degree in Information Systems from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, California. He and his family live now in Annandale, Virginia.
