Biography

I am chair of the UW - Engage Faculty Advisory Group for the UW Academic Technology’s Engage program (http://engage.wisc.edu/). The program provides awards to instructors that adopted demonstrated learning technologies in their teaching as well as support the development of new innovative approaches that make use of new technologies and tools. For the past two years we have been exploring the use of games and simulations in higher education. Participation in this program has helped to keep me informed of new technologies and how they are being used in higher education. I am actively involved in the UW-based NSF sponsored program the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning. CIRTL promotes the development of a national faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) committed to implementing and advancing effective teaching practices for diverse student audiences as part of their professional careers (http://www.cirtl.net/). I along with Prof. Sharon Dunwoody from the School of Journalism, developed the program in graduate training outreach. We developed a cross-campus STEM graduate student course on public outreach (http://www.cirtl.net/IEguidebook.pdf). This program lead to the UW-Madison Delta Program - a research, teaching and learning community for faculty, academic staff, post-docs, and graduate students that seeks to help current and future faculty succeed in the changing landscape of science, engineering, and math higher education. I am co-faculty Director of Delta. I am, along with Prof. Jon Martin, one of the Weather Guys on Wisconsin Public Radio. Since 1999 he and I are regular monthly guests on a live radio call-in show hosted by Larry Mueller. We are on the last Monday of every month from 11:45 to 12:30 central time.
