Anabela Alves

Biography

Anabela C. Alves is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Production and Systems/School of Engineering/University of Minho.
She holds a Ph.D. in Production and Systems Engineering, being affiliated to Centre ALGORITMI/LASI.
Her main research interests are in the areas of Production Systems Design and Operation; Lean Production (Lean Healthcare, Lean Services, Lean Product Development, Lean & TRIZ, Lean-Green and Lean & Ergonomics); Production Planning and Control, Project Management and Engineering Education, with particular interest in active learning methodologies, Project-Led Education (PLE), Project/Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Lean Education.
She is author/coauthor of more than 200 publications in conferences publications or communications, 3 books, 4 co-edited books, 6 editions of conference proceedings, 44 book chapters and more than 60 international journal articles.
She supervised 5 PhDs and she is supervising 3 PhDs, supervised one post-doc, more than 100 Master dissertations and co-supervised 15, besides having supervised 22 BSc. degree projects in the areas of Industrial Engineering and Management. She was President of Master´s Jury exams of more than 60 and she was examiner of almost 100 Master dissertations and four PhD.
She is "Top Peer Reviewer", having done more than 170 reviews for international journals and more than 200 reviews for conferences.
She is a founder member of Project Approaches in Engineering Education (PAEE) association (http://paee.dps.uminho.pt) and a permanent member of the Scientific and Organizing Committee of the International Conference on Active Learning in Engineering Education (PAEE/ALE). She has been organizing the topic of Curriculum Innovations, Pedagogy and Learning Methodologies in the ASME conference IMECE and the track of Engineering Education since IMECE2021.
She was funded by FLAD through “Papers@USA" to participate in IMECE in 2013 and 2017. She was visiting scholar in Oakland University, US (7 of September to 7 of December 2014). She was a mobility teacher in University Polytechnique delle Marche (Ancona, Italy, 2018) under Erasmus+ program, Bucarest University (Romenia, 2018) and Eindhoven University of Technology (Eindhoven, Netherlands, 2022).
She is member of the following societies and networks: SOCOLNET - Society of Collaborative Networks; Portuguese Society of Engineering Education (SPEE); Portuguese Institute of Industrial Engineering (IPEI); American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); Lean Education Academic Network (LEAN), European Professors of Industrial Engineering and Management (EPIEM) (being a member of the drive group) and advisor fellow of IEM Care Foundation.
She won the pedagogical award of School of Engineering of University of Minho in 2021. She was distinguished in the list of “World’s Top 2% Scientists 2022”, study of Stanford University (EUA) and of Elsevier group. She was selected for the International Mentoring Program, promoted by the International Mentoring Foundation for the Advancement of Higher Education (IMFAHE).
She was involved in 3 financed projects and one in progress with industry.
She has been organizing workshops about Lean Education and PBL.
She is collaborating with General Inspectorate of Education and Science (in Portuguese: Inspeção-Geral da Educação e Ciência) as expert external examiner of public Portuguese Schools.
