Aprille McKay

Biography

Aprille C. McKay is the Assistant Director for University Collections and Records Management for the archives of the University of Michigan at the Bentley Historical Library. She holds a JD from the University of Chicago and a a Masters in Information Studies with a specialization in Archives and Records Management from Michigan's School of Information. She is currently the chair of the Intellectual Property Working Group, the copyright advocacy arm of the Society of American Archivists. She recently co-authored Rights in the Digital Era, a book published in 2014 by SAA.

    This paper defines data protection as “the principles and processes for protecting data from corruption, misapplication, compromise, misuse, and loss.” Data protection leverages evolving technology and emerging practices to focus on how to apply the three critical information security imperatives: confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
