Barbara Walker

Biography

Barbara Walker has over 30 years of experience in the computer industry in a variety of areas including management, software application development, systems analysis, systems project management, business process reengineering, strategic planning, and networking. Ms. Walker is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso with a BBA in Accounting.

Her involvement in the El Paso, Texas and surrounding community has included: El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce BizTech Co-Founder/Co-Chair, Digital El Paso, El Paso Collaborative for Community & Economic Development Board, the Orion Project, Center for Volunteerism and Non-profit Management Board, Hospice of El Paso Board, Tech. Prep/School to Career Board, El Paso Executive Forum, El Paso Community College Technology Advisory Council, YWCA Technology Advisory Council, El Paso Times Business Advisory Council, Upper Rio Grande Girl Scout Council Strategic Planning Committee, Congressman Silvestre Reyes' Education Citizens Advisory Panel (EdCAP) Chair.

She has received Congressional Recognition from Congressman Silvestre Reyes, and has been a contributing writer to the El Paso Times Sunday Edition, writing about technology, education, and business, and has hosted a weekly local Tech Talk Time Warner Cable TV show. Together with Dr. Richard Rhodes, president of El Paso Community College, she co-authored an article entitled “The Orion Project: Connecting A Community”, published in 2004 by the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks (JALN) - A publication of the Sloan Consortium http://www.sloan-c.org/publications/jaln/v8n1/v8n1_rhodes.asp . She also collaborated in an article on the Orion Project published in the December 1, 2004 Distance Education Report (Volume 8, Number 23) entitled Networks for the People: Closing the Digital Divide in El Paso, written by Catherine Stover.

Ms. Walker has been a speaker at he El Paso Hispanic Chamber BizTech Conference, and has participated in and led numerous public forums and panels. In 2004 she was inducted into the El Paso Hispanic Chamber BizTech Technology Hall of Fame. In 2005 she was invited to become a member of the Paso del Norte Group, a regional group of civic and business leaders. In 2006 she was invited to become a member of the Creative Cities Leadership project formed by the El Paso City Manager, a group focused creating a blueprint for economic development based in establishing the region as a center for technology, talent and tolerance. In 2008 she was inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame.

Currently, Ms. Walker is a Territory Account Manager for Cisco Systems, managing West Texas public sector clients.. Cisco Systems, Inc.
