Bas Cordewener is manager of international collaboration for the SURF Foundation in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The SURF Foundation was established in 1987 to coordinate the implementation of a multiyear plan for improving the application of information technology in Dutch universities, higher vocational education schools, and research institutes. In the course of its activities, SURF has become a nationwide supplier of services. SURF manages the computer network of the Netherlands and deals with licensing agreements in the fields of software, hardware, and information services. The SURF Foundation in general and Cordewener in particular have been deeply involved in funding, developing, and promoting a variety of important global initiatives in cooperation with organizations like JISC in the United Kingdom, DEST in Australia, and Internet2 and EDUCAUSE in the United States.
