Brian Hawkins

Biography

Brian L. Hawkins was the founding President and Chief Executive Officer of EDUCAUSE, serving from 1998 to 2008, when he retired. Hawkins was responsible for the consolidation and integration of the organizations CAUSE and Educom into a single association that would serve the broad range of information technology interests in higher education. During this time, national networking initiatives were consolidated under Net@EDU, and the highly-respected EDUCAUSE Policy Office facilitated a unified voice in Washington, D.C. for the higher education IT perspective, working in concert with the higher education presidential organizations, and often testifying before Congress on key networking, security, privacy and educational issues. Also, the U.S. Department of Commerce selected EDUCAUSE to be the administrator of the .edu Internet domain. During Hawkins’ tenure, professional development opportunities for EDUCAUSE members were expanded significantly, with the creation of a regional conference strategy, the development of the Frye Leadership Institute (in partnership with CLIR and Emory University), higher education’s first annual conference on cyber-security, an annual conference on Enterprise Computing, and the association’s first online professional development efforts with EDUCAUSE Live! EDUCAUSE also partnered with a host of presidential associations and other higher education organizations to offer joint professional development opportunities for college and university leaders. In this initial decade of the association, the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR), the EDUCAUSE Core Data Service (CDS), and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) were all created to bring focus to the research, analytics and teaching and learning needs of members across the spectrum of IT in higher education. Prior to joining EDUCAUSE, Hawkins was senior vice president for Academic Planning and Administrative Affairs at Brown University. Hawkins also served Brown as vice president for Computing and Information Services, acting senior vice president for Finance and Administration, and special assistant to the president for Academic Planning. In 1997, he served as part of a three-person team as acting president of Brown University. Before going to Brown, Hawkins was associate vice president for Academic Affairs at Drexel University. At Drexel, he was responsible for general academic planning and the first academic program in the nation to require access to a microcomputer, as well as integrating the use of technology throughout the curriculum. Hawkins began his academic career as a faculty member at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), where he served as department chairman and assistant dean of the College of Business. He is a management professor by training, having received his BA and MA from Michigan State University, and he received his Ph.D. from Purdue University. Hawkins has served on more than 25 Boards including the American Council on Education, the Forum for the Future of Higher Education, the Washington Higher Education Secretariat, the University of Richmond, the Consortium on Financing Higher Education (COFHE), the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), the International Consortium for Educational Computing, the National Center for Women and Information Technology, Educom, CAUSE, and EDUCAUSE. Hawkins has written five books and scores of articles, book chapters, and monographs on management, information resources, academic planning, and the use of technology in higher education.
