Brian Smith

Biography

I am a technology executive with 15+ years of experience leading enterprise IToperations, infrastructure strategy, and digital transformation initiatives — currently serving as Associate Director of Enterprise Infrastructure at Clayton State University, where I oversee Network Services and Systems Engineering teams and drive campus-wide technology modernization.

My career spans higher education and healthcare IT, including 13 years as CTO of a healthcare technology organization where I directed strategy, operations, and delivery for 500+ employees and 2,500+ contracted resources across multiple continents. Throughout both sectors, I've focused on aligning technology strategy with organizational mission, managing multimillion-dollar budgets, and building high-performing teams.

My areas of focus include cloud architecture (AWS/Azure), cybersecurity strategy and compliance (FERPA, HIPAA, NIST), AI/ML integration, SDLC governance, and institutional communications.

In higher education, I'm particularly interested in instructional technology modernization, data governance, IT service management, and the intersection of AI and campus operations. I'm passionate about sharing lessons learned navigating cloud migrations, hybrid infrastructure, and cybersecurity in resource-constrained higher ed environments.

Outside of work, I'm an active marathon runner and triathlete, a volunteer ambassador for NMDP (formerly Be the Match), and a lifelong learner committed to professional community.
