Biography

I am a scientist and entrepreneur. My company Metis Learning (metisllc.com) is a leading pioneer in visual learning. Our approach to learning is unique, and groundbreaking. Our software is in use in classrooms in the US and Australia, and has been shown to be effective in a controlled classroom study. I have won national and state-wide awards for my innovative approaches to teaching, many of which have been incorporated into the software. I am the recipient of the 2014 Charles Edwin Bessey Teaching Award from the Botanical Society of America, and the 2013 Innovations in Plant Systematics Education Prize from the American Society of Plant Taxonomists. I am also the recipient of a 2014 University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest post-secondary award in the state. You can hear me talk about my teaching here: http://metisllc.com/about/. I have over 30 years experience in higher education, and brings this experience to the development of the visual learning software. At present (2014), versions of our software are available on the PC and Mac for teaching plant identification, organic chemistry functional groups, amino acid structure, plant life cycles, plant structure terminology, and herpetology. This software is all available free on our website (http://metis-learning.com/learning-software/). We are in the process of creating an on-line version of our software, and in the coming year will create new learning modules in art history, genetics, and mathematics.
