Biography
Carly J. Born is an Academic Technologist and Moodle Administrator at Carleton College. She works with faculty across all disciplines of the college on the effective and strategic use of the LMS in their courses to further student learning, with a special focus on gamification. Outside of Carleton, Carly also teaches high school Japanese at a local project-based charter school, and is the chief instructor and president of the Minnesota Kyudo Renmei, an organization dedicated to the study of Japanese longbow archery.
Carly has completed a graduate certificate in Instructional Design at UW Stout. Prior to beginning her career in instructional technology, Carly earned her M.A. from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language, with a specialization in Computer-Assisted Language Learning and a certificate in Language Program Administration.

Vocabulary acquisition is one of the critical building blocks in acquiring foreign language fluency. Instructors typically expect students to learn vocabulary through study separate from the study of grammar or syntax, as well as through drilling and implicit contextual techniques.
