Biography

I am a senior instructional designer and the manager of the Faculty Center for Teaching & Instructional Technology at Penn State Harrisburg for which I am a co-founder. I have been researching and writing on faculty professional development for online teaching for a number of years, including a half-day workshop and numerous presentations at the annual Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning. Topics over the past three years have included a faculty online readiness tool, the essential attributes of faculty development programs, and the new possibilities created for face-to-face teaching by preparing to teach online. I have also presented at the Distance Education Conference (2006), the Adult Education Research Conference (2009), and the International Transformative Learning Conference (2007, 2009) on topics ranging from the transformative possibilities of teaching online to faculty professional development for teaching online. Invited presentations have been given at multiple Penn State campuses, and at the SUNY SOL Summit. At Penn State Harrisburg, the Faculty Center supports over 300 full-time and part-time faculty. My current work for the Faculty Center includes the planning and implementation of symposia, workshops, and other faculty professional development opportunities. I lead faculty development projects, coordinating efforts with other instructional designers from around the University. I design and develop web-enhanced, blended, hybrid, and online courses, and provide support and leadership in those efforts. With technology constantly evolving, I continually engage in the current research and literature for faculty development and instructional design, especially for online teaching and learning. In addition, I provide leadership in investigating existing and emerging instructional technologies and pedagogies, evaluate and assess their applicability to my University's needs, and determine resources needed for potential pilots of promising technologies. I use adult learning theory, and specifically transformative learning theory, to inform my work. My passion is faculty professional development for online teaching.
