Charlie Leonhardt

Biography

Charles F. Leonhardt is the Senior Director for Online Initiatives and Innovation at Georgetown University.

He works closely with Georgetown academic and administrative leadership, schools, departments, and programs to create new world-class programs across the broad spectrum of online programs (blended, distance, and massively open).  He works with colleagues to successfully deploy new and innovative technologies as well as researching and experimenting with emerging technologies.  

Mr. Leonhardt assists Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL), the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), and the Centre for Child Protection (CCP) at the Pontifical Gregorian University accomplish their missions by coordinating the platforms and services that Georgetown provides to support their online learning programs.  He is working to extend support for additional community-based learning programs and connected learning models by building partnerships with organizations consistent with the mission of the University.

He has worked to transform the University's Rank and Tenure and Faculty Search from a completely paper-based process to a fully online system.  He collaborated with colleagues in higher education to create the Common Identity and Trust Collaborative (CommIT), a national identity management initiative for lifelong learning.

Charlie coordinates the use of IdeaScale at Georgetown so that students, faculty, and staff may suggest ways to improve the University and use crowdsourcing to prioritize projects.  He is currently building strategies for shared services models in University environments.  Charlie lead the successful completion of middleware development and implementation for Project Sentinel, a major bioinformatics project sponsored by the National Library of Medicine.

Charlie serves as Treasurer of the Apereo Foundaton, a vibrant community of educators collaborating to create open software that advances teaching, learning, and research.   He has served as Coordinator the Common Solutions Group (CSG) and as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the P20W Education Standards Council (PESC).  

He actively participates in the activities of Apereo, Educause, Internet2, InCommon, CSG, PESC, Gartner Group, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities Conference on IT Management (AJCU-CITM).

Mr. Leonhardt received the Distinguished Service Award from PESC in 2011 and the Award for Exemplary Practices in Information Technology Solutions from Educause in 2000.

Charlie earned a Master of Science in Information Systems from American University and a Bachelors in Economics and Philosophy from Georgetown. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Masters of Technology Management Program at Georgetown.
