Charles Smith

Biography

Mr. Smith is an accomplished operations research practitioner. He has over thirty-five years experience designing and developing systems to help businesses improve their logistics operations. As Founder and President of ComQuip, Inc., Mr. Smith is focused on building a strong client base of satisfied customers employing modern software products to schedule and plan their operations. Mr. Smith graduated from Cornell University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. He received his Master of Science degree in Industrial Administration from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1973 after two years serving his country in the armed forces. Upon graduation, Mr. Smith joined Arthur D. Little, Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. For the next eight years, he worked for over 100 clients developing logistics systems in the Operations Research Group. Most assignments required definition of new control methods for clients who found themselves strapped by their existing systems. Most involved introduction of modern computerized control techniques. In 1981, Mr. Smith joined Hercules, Inc. in Wilmington, Delaware as Manager, Operations Research. Over the next fifteen years he developed an operations research activity at Hercules, which included development of a specialized inventory control and production planning system for their process operations. Mr. Smith led a team to develop a new customer service system at Hercules, which lead to significant savings. His succeeding positions included Director, Product Planning and Control, Director, Production Analysis and Inventory Management and Director, Information Technology. In 1996, Mr. Smith joined Applied Business Technologies, Inc. of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania as Vice President and General Manager. Over the next two years, the company doubled sales as Mr. Smith developed Sales, Marketing and Service organizations to capitalize on ABT’s product strength. He was eventually promoted to Executive Vice President. Mr. Smith left ABT in December 1998 to start ComQuip, Inc. Mr. Smith is President and General Manager of ComQuip, Inc. In its nine years, he has grown the company to serve hundreds of higher education and government clients throughout the United States. Mr. Smith received the Bronze Star for his service in Viet Nam. He has served as an officer on the Boston area APICS regional council. He is a certified APICS practitioner. He has been a guest speaker and member of APICS, the Operations Research Society of America, The Institute of the Management Sciences, and the Council of Logistics Management. Mr. Smith has been a guest lecturer at the Amos Tuck School of Management, Dartmouth University.
