Chris Starr
Biography
Christopher Starr, PhD joined the Department of Supply Chain and Information Management as an associate professor of information management in January 2015. He was formerly chair of computer science (13 years) and a faculty member in computer science (27 years). Dr. Starr holds a BS in Mathematics from the College of Charleston and an MS (1986) and PhD (1990) in Systems Science from the Medical University of South Carolina. His dissertation was in nuclear medicine and radiation dosimetry where he developed a new dual-isotope procedure for attenuation correction in single photon emission computed tomograms for cardiac imaging in vivo. His interdisciplinary research and teaching interests include object-oriented and service-oriented design, business process modeling and enactment, and tech entrepreneurship. Dr. Starr has consulted with many private and public sector organizations, agencies and universities, including SPAWAR-Atlantic (Charleston), Charleston Stereotactic Radiosurgery Group (Charleston), the Medical University of South Carolina, Appalachian State University, Boeing (Seattle), Social US Security Administration (Baltimore), ATOS (Netherlands), and JPMorgan Chase (NY). Dr. Starr drafted the program proposal and curriculum for the MS in Computer Science (2000), chaired the development of the first undergraduate data science program in the United States (2005), created and published a four-year high computer science curriculum for high schools (2007), and lead a number of Google projects in Charleston for pedagogical design for high tech instruction. Dr. Starr served as Director of Strategic Technology Planning and Chair of the Information Technology Council in the Office of the President with Mr. Lee Higdon, College of Charleston. In the School of Business, Dr. Starr serves as a founder and first director of ICAT (Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Technology), the College’s first talent accelerator for technology entrepreneurship offering lean startup success to undergraduate students in the liberal arts, science and business.EDUCAUSE Publications
