David Ernst

Biography

David J. Ernst is the CIO and Associate Vice President for the University of California system. He is responsible for strategic guidance and facilitation for systemwide information technology initiatives as well as for the technology support for the Office of the President. Prior to re-joining the University of California in July of 2008, David was CIO and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Information Technology Services at the California State University system where he provided leadership for information technology initiatives and policy across the 23-campus CSU system. Prior to joining the CSU in 1995, David was a senior manager consulting in higher education for Coopers & Lybrand. David has held senior technology management positions at UC San Diego and Stanford University and was the Chief Information Officer at UC San Francisco. David has served on the CAUSE Board of Directors and was chair of the 1992 CAUSE annual conference. He was a founding faculty member of both the Director and Manager programs of the EDUCAUSE Management Institute in which he taught for 10 years. He also served as co-Director of the Executive Seminar which was held in Snowmass, Colorado each August. He holds bachelors degrees in political science and rhetoric and a law degree from the University of California, Davis.
