Dave Szatmary

Biography

David P. Szatmary currently serves as the vice provost of University of Washington Educational Outreach (UWEO), also known as UW Professional & Continuing Education. His career spans more than 30 years in Seattle at the University of Washington, and includes various roles within Educational Outreach, where he was promoted to vice provost in 1999. As vice provost for UWEO, Szatmary oversees 255 staff members who develop and administer fee-based programs which increase access to educational opportunities for wide-ranging populations, including non-traditional students. Offerings include: degrees, summer quarter and summer enrichment programs for children and youth, international programs, community partnerships, continuing education with an emphasis on professional certificate programs, online and onsite baccalaureate degree completion, online learning and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), conferences, English language programs, offerings for high school students and enrichment programs for adults of all ages. Szatmary provides strategic, fiscal and programmatic direction for UWEO, which serves nearly 50,000 students each year and represents one of the leading outreach programs among higher education institutions in the United States. He has increased UWEO revenues from $25M to $160M in recent years. Szatmary successfully launched many of the first certificate programs in the country, building 70 certificates prior to his leadership role as vice provost. He pioneered the concept of fee-based degrees, partnering with UW academic units to launch and offer nearly 80 degree programs. He has also led online education at the UW since its inception, guiding the launch of 17 online degrees, 40 online certificates and online degree completion. He pioneered the UW's success as an early adopter and leader in providing Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), including innovative offerings on Coursera and edX starting in 2012. These were preceded by more than a dozen free online courses with Prentice-Hall, begun in 2001. Szatmary has fostered many partnerships across peer institutions, businesses and industries. He created R1edu.org, a consortium of 34 Research 1/AAU institutions that provides online learning opportunities. He helped to establish ASG, a coalition of a dozen major universities dedicated to collaborative efforts, and has partnered with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Pearson/Prentice-Hall Publishing, Boeing, Microsoft and multiple international companies, to build educational programs for targeted audiences. Szatmary has driven significant infrastructure improvements throughout UWEO including implementation of a new student database, plus new systems for customer relationship management, content management and financial oversight. He developed a 10-year strategic plan, instituted a process improvement plan for lean operational effectiveness, serves on and chairs several major UW-wide committees, has established international partnerships including programs in Japan and Abu Dhabi, and has served as principal investigator on multiple grants, totaling more than $6 million. He received his undergraduate degree from Marquette University in Wisconsin, and his Masters and Ph.D. in American History from Rutgers University in New Jersey. He has written several books and appeared in various media interviews and national television.
