Doug Darby

Biography

Dr. Douglas Darby is Chair of the Department of Integrated Business Technologies, Communication, and Marketing and Associate Professor at Lubbock Christian University. He brings extensive industry experience in technology and digital media to his academic leadership and research, including professional work with Microsoft and digital agencies.

Dr. Darby's scholarly work bridges game studies and digital learning to understand learner diversity and engagement in online environments. He developed the Taxonomy of Online Learner Types (TOLT), a framework integrating game-player typologies with pedagogical theory to differentiate and classify distinct learner types in online instructional contexts. His current research examines ethical AI adoption, immersive technologies for online learning, and assessment strategies aligning academic and professional outcomes.

Dr. Darby has served on the NMC Horizon Report Advisory Boards, contributing to technology forecasting that reached over 1.25 million readers worldwide. He holds a Ph.D. in Learning Technologies from the University of North Texas, an M.S. in Digital Media, and a B.S. in Psychology from Abilene Christian University.
