Ellen Chaffee

Biography

Dr. Ellen Chaffee has been president of Valley City State University since 1993. From 1993 until 2002, she was also president of Mayville State University, a unique arrangement that won a national administrative leadership award. Dr. Chaffee has been national president of the Association for Institutional Research and the Association for the Study of Higher Education. She has written five books and many articles on strategic management, quality, innovation, and leadership. She is frequently an invited speaker at local, regional, and national events. She earned a Ph.D. in higher education administration and policy analysis at Stanford University. Chaffee has received Computerworld’s Premier 100 IT Leader award, Outstanding Woman of North Dakota Awards from both Women of Today and the North Dakota Women’s Network, Preservation North Dakota’s Legacy Award for leadership in historic preservation, the North Dakota Chamber of Commerce Educator Award, and the North Dakota National Leadership Award of Excellence.
