Emily Pender

Biography

Emily Pender is Assistant Director of Export Control Compliance in the Office of Ethics and Compliance at the University of Southern California (USC). She is the operational lead for USC's Export Control Compliance and Research Security programs and partners with diverse campus stakeholders to address complex issues and federal mandates in the regulatory compliance space. 

At USC, Emily serves on the Research Security Governance Council, Cybersecurity Working Group, Research Compliance Working Group, and UAS (Drone) Review Board. She manages USC's standing faculty committee charged with oversight of restricted research, and was instrumental in the successful CMMC C3PAO certifications for the Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) and Information Sciences Institute (ISI) within USC's Viterbi School of Engineering. Emily developed USC's custom online training modules on Export Controls, Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), and Insider Threat Awareness. She also co-authored CITI Program's "Research Security Advanced Refresher" course module on "Cybersecurity and Research Security".

Emily is an active member of the Association of University Export Control Officers (AUECO), where she has served as Executive Board Secretary, presented at annual conferences, and contributed to comment letters to the U.S. Departments of State and Commerce.

Emily holds a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University and a Master of Science in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania.
