Biography
Gene Wiemers is Interim Director of Libraries at The College of Wooster. He is providing leadership and guidance as Wooster looks for a new director.
He is also Librarian Emeritus of Bates College, Until July 2015 he served as vice president for information and library services and librarian. He came to Bates in 1994 as college librarian, and served in this capacity and as a member of the Bates information services management team until he assumed leadership of Information and Library Services in 2000. He oversaw library, archives, computing, telecommunications and media services at the college. He also served as assistant university librarian for collection management at Northwestern University, and served in leadership roles in collection development and public services at the libraries of Michigan State University and the University of Minnesota.
His work has focused on developing collaborative efforts in library and information services; managing the transformation to electronic library collections; and building support services that link information access, information use and technology services, including cooperative projects in collection development, preservation and electronic services among the schools of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) and collaborative programs in library and information technology services for Colby, Bates and Bowdoin (CBB) colleges. He serves on the board of visitors of the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine and the board of directors of the Council on Library and Information Resources.
He is a Macalester College graduate and has an M.A. and Ph.D. in Latin American history from the University of Chicago. He received an M.S. in library and information science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
