Gina Riggs
Biography
Gina is the inaugural Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) at Wichita State University where she is responsible for the protection of privacy regarding educational, research, and service-related data. In addition to being a CPO, Gina brings with her the diverse experience of engaging others through her work as a speech language pathologist (SLP) in a medical setting, a clinical faculty and clinic director in a university setting, and a HIPAA Privacy Officer. She maintains her certification as a Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) through the International Association of Privacy Professionals and her licensure and certification as a SLP.
Gina advises on and oversees a complex selection of privacy related initiatives linked to a variety of stakeholders who are within and connected to the university. She also provides guidance on privacy in laws and regulations such as HIPAA, FERPA, and GDPR, among others.
Gina is passionate about increasing the knowledge and understanding of the importance of privacy in her institution. She achieves this through engaging others to become active participants in meeting the goal of balancing privacy requirements and ethical and equitable use of data with legitimate institutional needs. The variety of experiences that Gina obtained from her background in communication and through her previous work as a clinician, clinical professor, and clinic director, have prepared her to work with a variety of individuals across a variety of settings to improve privacy for all.
