Hugh Burns

Biography

Hugh came to be Professor and Chair of the Department of English, Speech, and Foreign Languages at Texas Woman's University in 1998. He served in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1989, at the Air Force Academy and Human Systems Center (right here in San Antonio). In 1989, he joined The University of Texas at Austin. From 1993 to 1998, he directed academic computing at Smith College. He is a founder and Chairman of the Board of The Daedalus Group -- designers of Pearson Education's Daedalus Online.

His professional affiliations include EDUCAUSE, the National Council of Teachers of English, Texas Council of Teachers of English, Rhetoric Society of America, among others. He has served on the editorial boards of College Composition and Communication, Computers and Composition, and Rhetoric Review. The annual outstanding dissertation award from the journal _Computers and Composition_ is named in his honor. Last May, he co-chaired the 16th International Conference on Computers and Writing. He loves to visit San Antonio, for two of his three daughters and two of his four grandchildren live right here.
