Ian Washburn

Biography

Ian Washburn is a higher education cybersecurity and technology executive with more than 25 years of experience leading security operations, architecture, risk management, governance, and resilience initiatives across public Big Ten and private R1 university environments. Currently serving as Deputy CISO, Director of Information Security overseeing Engineering, Analysis, Operations, and Security Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, he leads enterprise programs including vulnerability management, incident response, security operations, and awareness and training. He also provides strategic leadership support and development with regard to zero trust, AI security and governance, data governance, policy development, and building community trust.

Ian is known for translating complex technology and cybersecurity risks into clear institutional strategy, executive-ready communication, and sustainable programs that support teaching, research, service, and institutional trust. He previously served at Indiana Univeristy as Systems Risk Manager, including leadership of a seven-person security analyst team. Ian is a certified in information security and privacy, an active public speaker, and a nonprofit volunteer and board member.
