Dr. James P. Frazee is the Senior Academic Technology Officer and Director of Instructional Technology Services (ITS) at San Diego State University. He has written and presented widely on the subjects of obtaining, managing and leveraging large state and federal educational technology grants, designing faculty professional development programs, strategic technology planning and using technology to push curriculum reform. James was among a select group of “fellows” at the prestigious EDUCAUSE Frye Leadership Institute at Emory University in 2008. More recently, he has written and been invited to present and lead workshops based on his experience designing active learning environments. His academic research focuses on using technology to promote student-centered learning strategies in higher education. In 2011, the Directors of Educational Technology / California Higher Education (DET/CHE) presented Dr. Frazee with their Outstanding Service Award for his role as President and 25th Anniversary Conference Chair. In 2015, Dr. Frazee was honored with the Center for Digital Education’s Top 30 Technologists, Transformers and Trailblazers Award recognizing him as a thought leader in higher education. In 2016, he received San Diego State University’s President’s Leadership Fund Faculty & Staff Excellence Award “in recognition of innovative, forward-thinking and community-based work." During his 18 years at SDSU, James has played an integral part in supporting the academic success of faculty and students. His work at SDSU has included serving as a member of the faculty in the Learning Design & Technology Department, oversight of Instructional Technology Services, including the campus’ move into online education, and as Senior Academic Technology Officer, he is playing a critical role in aligning the work of ITS with the University’s "Building on Excellence" strategic plan and Graduation Initiative 2025. James’ more than 20 years of professional experience in education, with progressively responsible senior level experience in IT and educational technology leadership positions, reflect his unwavering commitment to student success. Currently, his department at San Diego State is responsible for the learning management system and associated academic technologies, instructional design, creative services (video production, streaming, graphic design), and classroom technology, as well as both pedagogical and technological training for faculty and staff.
