Jane Rosenthal

Biography

Jane Rosenthal, JD, CCEP is the Director of Compliance and Policy at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO. She Co-Chairs the CPO Educause group for Educause members with a significant privacy role at their College or University. She is a Member of HEISC and the GRC committee. She formerly was the Director of the Privacy Office for the University of Kansas located in Lawrence, Kansas, a direct report to the Office of the Provost, and has occupied various roles with the University for over a decade. As the Privacy Director, Jane is responsible for direction of campus-wide policy, procedure and review of various State and Federal laws with privacy provisions, including HIPAA, FERPA, GLBA, etc. Prior to this position, Jane served for seven years at the University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, Inc. as the Corporate Counsel responsible for all research contracts, public and private, received by the KUMC campuses. This role involved the licensing of intellectual property from the university and work with export control issues. Prior to her work in Higher Education, Jane earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs at the University of Colorado at Boulder and her Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas School of Law. Jane was admitted to the Missouri Bar in 1992 and the Kansas Bar in 1993. She worked for the state of Missouri both in the Commission on Human Rights as an investigator and ALJ and then for the Circuit Court of Jackson County, Missouri (Kansas City) providing in-house employment counsel and successfully argues cases at the administrative and appellate levels. Jane has been involved with various organizations during her legal and university careers including Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the Missouri Bar, the Lawyers Association of Kansas City and the KC Metro Bar Association, and the National Association of Administrative Law Judges (NAALJ) and has presented at seminars for many of these. Jane is married to a phenomenal husband, has 2 smart and beautiful daughters and a dog that barks a lot and keeps the household hopping.
