Joel Smith

Biography

Joel Smith is the former vice provost and chief information officer for Carnegie Mellon, Computing Services and former director of the Office of Technology for Education. Prior to his tenure at Carnegie Mellon, Joel directed academic and administrative computing at a number of institutions including Allegheny College, The Claremont Graduate University, and MiraCosta College. He also has held various academic appointments at Carnegie Mellon, the University of California at San Diego, Indiana University, The Claremont Graduate University, and Allegheny College. Joel has been involved in technology enhanced learning projects for over 20 years. He has been a principle investigator on the Open Learning Initiative, a multi-year project at Carnegie Mellon funded by a number of foundations, designed to develop demonstrably effective online courses through the application of design principles and practices from cognitive science. Joel serves on advisory boards for Apple Computer, Campus Technologies magazine, and a number of universities. He earned his Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh.
