John Briar

The Managing Senior Director of Infrastructure Services reporting to the Associate Vice President for Information Technology/CIO of San José State University. John received his Bachelors degree from Fresno State in Business Administration Information Systems and Decision Sciences option in 1981. Upon graduation, he accepted a programmer/analyst position with Chevron Corporation and worked in varying capacities supporting marketing applications systems for 16 years. “The exposure to the breadth of information technology deployed at Chevron was invaluable experience to manage the complexities of systems interrelationships with business processes” says John. While at Chevron, he earned an MBA from the Haas School at UC Berkeley in 1989. John started working at Fresno State in April, 1997 as the project director of the PeopleSoft HR and Financials Implementation Project. The successful implementation of this project led to increased responsibilities within Administrative Services and the university including the consolidation of information systems support by forming Campus Information Systems in July, 2002 under John’s leadership. He has participated in various CSU system-wide initiatives including serving as chair of the Common Management Systems (CMS) Project Director Team. His knowledge, leadership and people skills are widely respected locally and throughout the CSU system. John accepted a position of Senior Director of Information Systems at Cal State Northridge in April 2011 and supports all information systems, ID and DB management, and enterprise web development for the institution. This exposure to a similar IT function at another larger campus provided insight on how development and support processes scale to the larger size. In April 2012, John accepted a position at San José State University to lead a major IT infrastructure improvement project within the IT Services organization. This project was targeted to provide next generation IT to the campus users for network, compute, voice, video, security and collaborative technologies. His breadth of responsibility expanded to include departmental management of Infrastructure Services to assist in the transformation of IT service delivery at SJSU.
