Ken Layng came to Penn State in 2004 to join ITS' Training Services unit. In this capacity, his primary function is to provide for the training needs of IT staff across the university. He has built a variety of programs around collaborative and web-based technologies to make the resources available to a geographically-dispersed audience. Since coming to Penn State, he has cultivated a community of IT professionals across campus and departmental boundaries, leveraged the collective knowledge of that community to provide effective learning and support opportunities, built collaborative tools to support staff who are traditionally marginalized from training opportunities, and used the strength of the community to create strategic alliances and negotiate vendor discounts for staff development opportunities. Ken recently authored a paper on the subject of building and maintaining community of IT staff in decentralized environments which is available for download from the Educause website.
