Louw Smith

Biography

Louw is a Senior Engineer for Information Security & Data Privacy at Harvard University, where he focuses on threat detection engineering, incident response, and applied deep learning/AI in support of the university’s Privacy and Security Operations team. He leads efforts to design and operationalize security automation, threat hunting, and digital forensics capabilities, and serves as a trusted advisor to campus stakeholders on secure processes, systems, and workflows across hybrid cloud and on‑premises environments.

Before joining Harvard, Louw was a Senior Security Analyst at Boston College, providing campus-wide security support in areas including SIEM engineering, intrusion detection and response, security consulting, and implementation of compliance frameworks such as NIST SP 800‑171. Earlier in his career, he held technical and leadership roles in research and government environments, including work in large-scale data management and cloud security at UCSF and digital forensics architecture at NASA Ames Research Center.

He holds an MSc in Digital Investigation & Forensic Computing from University College Dublin and a Baccalaureate in Economics from the University of California, Davis.
