Dr. Mark Koan is the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Maricopa Community College District, comprising 10 colleges and nearly 40 locations. The system is among the largest providers of higher education in the country, serving well over 150,000 students per year. As the CIO, he is responsible for developing the IT vision and strategy to ensure Maricopa’s enterprise systems help improve student outcomes, enhance the student experience, and transform the delivery of services across the district. His team earned a global award for innovation for their deployment of unified communication technologies across the system.
Before serving as the CIO for the Maricopa Community Colleges, Dr. Koan was appointed to as an Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) to lead the district's technology transformation efforts. Prior to that he served as the AVC of Infrastructure and Customer Care for the district IT team, where he was responsible for the strategic and operational direction of Maricopa's enterprise infrastructure and customer care divisions. Previously, Dr. Koan was the CIO at Phoenix College(PC). While there, Dr. Koan and his team built the first high-availability services at PC, designed and installed state-of-the-art technology solutions for construction projects involving more than 200,000 sq. ft. of space, and built a mobile app for students that won the Innovation of the Year Award for the Maricopa Community Colleges. Prior to working for the Maricopa Community Colleges, Dr. Koan was an IT Director at Arizona State University where he led several diverse teams across multiple locations and was tapped to help develop and advance strategic alliances for ASU's University Technology Office -- including work with key industry partners such as Google, Verizon and Amazon.
Dr. Koan has spoken at national conferences on a variety of topics including innovation and student success, IT collaboration, security, and project management. He has also been published and has a broad teaching background that includes secondary, post-secondary, graduate and overseas courses covering a wide range of subjects.
