MJ Tooey

Biography

M.J. Tooey is Associate Vice President, Academic Affairs and Executive Director of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library at the University of Maryland, Baltimore where she has worked in various library positions since 1986. She is also the Director of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine’s (NNLM) Southeastern Atlantic Regional Medical Library and the National DOCLINE Coordinating Office under a cooperative agreement with the National Library of Medicine at NIH. She received her MLS from the University of Pittsburgh and her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Clarion State University (formerly Clarion State College).

 

Tooey served as president of the Medical Library Association (MLA) from 2005-2006 and was elected a Fellow of the association in 2009. She has also served on MLA’s Board of Directors and as the Chair of the 2004 National Program Committee for the 2004 MLA Annual Meeting.. In 1997 she received the MLA Estelle Brodman Award as Academic Medical Librarian of the Year. She was the 2016 MLA Janet Doe Lecturer.

 

She teaches an MLA CE course “Leadership Considered: Refining and Defining Your Skills for Today and Tomorrow.” She also co-teaches an MLA CE E course, “Do You Want to Be a Library Director?”  She currently serves on the MLA/AAHSL Joint Legislative Task Force.

 

She has served as president of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) where she also served as a Board member. In 2016-17, she served as one of five mentors in the NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows program.

 

She is the 2011 recipient of Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences.

 

She is currently a member of Elsevier’s North American Library Advisory Board. Tooey has also served on the Board of Trustees for Lyrasis, the nation’s largest regional non-profit membership organization serving libraries. Additionally, she served on the library advisory committees for FASEB and on the library advisory board for the New England Journal of Medicine. She is active in the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions Council of Library Directors where she serves on the Executive Council.

 

Tooey is the author or co-author of over 200 chapters, articles, presentations, or posters. Her professional interests include leadership, emerging trends, community engagement, data science, library innovation, responsive facility and programmatic design, ethics, and mentoring.

 

She is an avid traveler and occasional avid gardener. Tooey’s career goals are to retire w/o killing anyone, remember what is truly important in life, and not take herself too seriously.
