Mehran Basiratmand


Mehran Basiratmand, PhD is the Chief Technology Officer at Florida Atlantic University. He is responsible for the strategic and operational planning of FAU Data Center, academic and High-performance computing, mission-critical applications (including Blackboard and Banner ERP), business intelligence and reporting, middleware including directory services and application integration), cloud-based applications, identity management team, database team including support for Oracle, ODS and MS SQL as well as Communication Infrastructure. Other responsibilities include desktop standards, unified storage, user services, virtualization, collaboration and messaging systems as well as DR resources and secondary FLR representative for FAU. Prior to that, he was Director of Academic Computing Services responsible for providing direction for learning management systems, establishing academic and research computing guidelines, emerging technologies and IT security in support of FAU Information Technology mission. Mehran has earned his PhD in Higher Education leadership at Florida Atlantic University focusing on organizational transformation. He has a Master of Science Degree in Computing from Barry University and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from FIU in Miami, Florida. He has successfully completed Certificate in Systems Dynamic from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); Certificate in Project Management from University of Miami, and Certificate from Educause Leadership Institute in Colorado. Prior to joining FAU, he had served at multiple roles in IT leadership, User Services and Programming Analyst. Furthermore, he has conducted technology assessment and educational services for the Panamanian Parliament, keynote speaker at Internet Conference in Peru, Summit of Americas in Chile, and consulting services for Trinidad Telecommunications Authority. For the past twenty years, Mehran has taught courses at Florida International University, Barry University and Florida Atlantic University Executive Programs. He is an active member of Miami Electronic Crime Taskforce sponsored by the United State Secret Service and serves on a couple of advisory boards. Currently, he is the Chair-elect of Policy Board for NorthWest Regional Data Center (NWRDC) which is one of the two primary datacenters designated by the Florida Legislators. Mehran has had articles and citing in the areas of: unified storage strategies, importance of user experience, application virtualization, predictive modeling, High Performance Computer Center, alignment of IT plan with the institutional plan, IT organizational maturity under centralized/decentralized model, deployment of hybrid cloud model for efficiency and high-availability as well as ethical hacking.
