Peggy Hoon

Biography

The Director for Copyright Policy and Education is a new position for Louisiana State University and operates out of Middleton Library, Dean's Office. It is intended to provide the campus community with assistance and information with respect to the use and ownership of copyrighted materials in furtherance of the teaching, research, and outreach missions of the University. Additionally, it will provide support to the Library for copyright and licensing issues. Prior to moving to LSU, Peggy Hoon served as the Scholarly Communications Librarian for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), housed in the JMA [J. Murrey Atkins Library], Peggy Hoon served as a campus-wide scholarly communication, copyright, open access, and library licensing resource and was available for workshops, presentations, and individual consultations. In addition to raising campus copyright and open access awareness, Peggy focused particularly on copyright as it intersects with library collections and services. Prior to joining UNCC, Hoon served as the Special Assistant to the Provost for Copyright Administration at NC State and as the NCSU Scholarly Communication Librarian for over twelve years where she authored the TEACH Act Toolkit and achieved a national reputation for copyright expertise. As the Association of Research Libraries first Visiting Scholar for Campus Copyright and Intellectual Property, Hoon headed the "Know Your Copy Rights" web site and brochure. She has worked extensively with the Center for Intellectual Property at the University of Maryland University College. has served as its Virtual Intellectual Property Scholar and is the American Library Association's 2008 recipient of the L. Ray Patterson Award in Support of Users' Rights. She holds a J.D. from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Colorado. Ms. Hoon works in consultation with UNC-Charlotte's Office of Legal Affairs, which is the only office on campus to give legal advice. In addition to a J.D. Degree from the University of Washington, Hoon holds a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Colorado.
