Biography
Dr. Peter J. Murray is the Senior Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). Dr. Murray has been in this position since 2002. He oversees the operations of the Center for Information Technology Services which develops and maintains mission-critical systems including human resources, financial, student, research, and teaching and learning systems as well as audio and video technologies, communication and collaboration systems, web application development, telecommunication operations, and the campus network infrastructure. Dr. Murray is also responsible for overseeing and coordinating campus-wide information technology planning, including policies, committees, and the overall strategy for the University. Prior to joining UMB, Dr. Murray was the Vice Provost for Information Technologies and Chief Information Officer for The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Dr. Murray was the CIO at that University for nearly eight years. From 1985 to 1992, he worked for the State University of New York (SUNY) at the Central Administration headquarters. At SUNY Central Administration, he was responsible for managing information systems and research projects for the sixty-four colleges and universities in the State University of New York system. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Policy Studies from the University at Albany, State University of New York, a Certificate of Advanced Standing from the University at Albany, and a Master's of Science from SUNY Plattsburgh. Dr. Murray received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Middlebury College. His teaching specialties are the Management of Information Sciences and IT Leadership and Organizational Management. During his thirty-year tenure as a CIO he has been an active participant on Educause, Internet2, and industry advisory groups, councils, and committees, including the Educause IT Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) Program Advisory Committee and serving as a past co-chair of the Higher Education Information Security Council (HEISC).
