Phyllis Self

Biography

Dr. Self received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1991. The title of her dissertation is: "Formal and Informal Communication Patterns among AIDS Researchers: An Investigation Based on Collaboration and Productivity." Prior to her current position as Dean of University Libraries at Western Illinois University Dr. Self was Vice Provost for Academic Technology, and Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Dr. Self served as a Health Sciences Librarian for a total of twenty-five years at VCU, University of Cincinnati and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has taught for several years an online course entitled "Health Informatics," as part of VCU's Ph.D. in Health-related Sciences program. She has been a member of American Medical Informatics Association, American Society for Information Science, Coalition for Networked Information, EDUCAUSE, Internet2, and the Southeastern University Research Association, SURA-CIO Council. Currently she is a member of the American Library Association, Illinois Library Association, and many community service organizations. She has published over thirty journal articles and a book in the fields of library and information science, and served as Principal Investigator on various grants totally near $3.5 million.
