Biography
Rebecca Alm is the Director of OnlineLearning at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where she is also a Full Professor in Fine Arts. Previous to her work with Online Learning, Rebecca Alm served as MCAD's Fine Arts Chair and Foundation Coordinator, teaching 2-D, Color Theory and Papermaking. She has an undergraduate BA in Art from Saint Olaf College, an MAT in Education from the University of St. Thomas, an MA in Design from the University of Minnesota and graduate study in painting, printmaking and drawing from the Graduate School at Pratt Institute. Her own paper making and mixed media is produced by working within severe process and form limitations. For example, during one six month period she made the same size sheet of paper every day. Each sheet had exactly 24 dots. In another project she pulped old books and made new papers from them. The bits and pieces of text that were not destroyed in the beating process become the new story. The old book takes on a new form in both visual structure and meaning depending upon the words that survive. She grows her own flax on family land and collects old garments and domestic linens for hand papermaking.
