Roy Chan

Biography

Roy Y. Chan, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Education and Ed.D. Program Director at Lee University, Tennessee. Previously, he served as the Director of TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) between 2019 and 2021, where he led the renewal of a 5-year grant of $1.3 million funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Prior to this, Roy worked at Indiana University Bloomington in the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs (OVPDEMA) and the 21st Century Scholars Program between 2016 and 2019.

Roy is an active member of ASHE, AEFP, AERA, ACPA, CIES, NASPA, and SREE. He has published peer-reviewed journal articles in Research in Higher EducationJournal of Comparative & International Higher Education, and Studies in Higher Education, and has served as an article reviewer for the Journal of Higher EducationJournal of First-generation Student Success, and Journal of International Students. Roy currently serves as Chair of the CIES Study Abroad and International Students (SAIS) Special Interest Group (SIG), where he leads the marketing and communication strategy of its 200+ members in the field of comparative higher education. Outside of CIES, Roy is passionate about doctoral student development, where he presently serves as Chair of the AERA Division J Outstanding Dissertation Award, Committee Member of the ASHE Bobby Wright Dissertation of the Year, and Editorial Board Member of the Research in Higher Education and Journal of Postsecondary Student Success. Roy also serves as Council Member of the Doctoral Education Council at Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) and At-Large Member of the Indiana University Asian American Pacific Islander Alumni Association (IUAA). 

Roy is the author of the books, Rethinking Hybrid and Remote Work in Higher Education: Global Perspectives, Policies, and Practices after COVID-19 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023), COVID-19 and Higher Education in the Global Context: Exploring Contemporary Issues (STAR Scholars, 2022), and Online Teaching and Learning in Higher Education during COVID-19: International Perspectives and Experiences (Routledge, 2021). He holds a Ph.D. in History, Philosophy, and Policy in Education from Indiana University Bloomington, a M.A. in Higher Education Administration from Boston College, a M.Ed. in Comparative Higher Education from The University of Hong Kong, and a B.A. in Criminology, Law & Society from the University of California, Irvine. Roy has been an research assistant at Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Michigan.
