Shawn Kim

Biography

Shawn Kim is the Director of Cybersecurity Governance, Risk, and Compliance at Stanford University’s Information Security Office, where she leads initiatives to strengthen cybersecurity governance and risk management across the University’s technology landscape. In this role, Shawn is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive governance frameworks, conducting risk assessments, and executing compliance strategies that help protect critical systems, data, and research infrastructure within one of the world’s leading academic institutions.

Prior to joining the Information Security Office, Shawn built her expertise in educational technology at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education, where she worked closely with academic and administrative stakeholders to support technology-enabled teaching, learning, and research. This experience gave her a deep understanding of the unique needs of higher education and the importance of balancing innovation, accessibility, and security.

Shawn now partners with campus leadership, IT teams, and cross-functional groups to integrate cybersecurity risk management and compliance into day-to-day operations and long-term planning. Known for her collaborative and pragmatic approach, she bridges the gap between technical security requirements and organizational goals, fostering a culture of shared responsibility and resilience.

Shawn holds a Master of Legal Studies in Cybersecurity Law and Policy from Texas A&M University School of Law and a Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering from San José State University.
