Leading Change Through Fatigue
Sophie and Jenay talk with Tacy Holliday and Joseph Drasin about their research on identifying change fatigue in teams and their related EDUCAUSE Review article that explores key insights from that work.
Experienced leader in strategy and operations with a passion for driving meaningful change. With a focus on human-centered leadership, I help organizations balance today’s demands with tomorrow’s possibilities, creating environments where teams thrive and innovation takes root.
I started my career in STEM education and worked my way from a math/science tutor to a learning center director and executive board member with the National College Learning Center Association. I got involved with Educause in 2013 as a member of the inaugural cohort of the Breakthrough Models Academy. After various staff and administrative roles in higher education, I pivoted to a technology services firm but have remained in higher education through teaching and committee roles at Montgomery College and, most recently, at University of Maryland Global Campus.

As change fatigue becomes more widespread in higher education, leaders need better ways to recognize when their teams are depleted so they can respond effectively. The Energy-Commitment Model offers a framework for guiding timely interventions that restore capacity and sustain change efforts.
Change fatigue causes staff to disengage and negatively affects higher education institutions, and the trend shows no signs of abating. Understanding the issue and then finding and implementing solutions will help college and university leaders continue to move their institutions forward.
