Biography
Tom Roderick is the Assistant Dean of Information Technology for the School of Medicine, at Virginia Commonwealth University. In this role, he serves as the leader of SOMTech, bridging the gap between the Health System and main VCU campus, supporting medical students, physicians and faculty, staff, and medical researchers. SOMTech is the largest IT unit outside of the central IT department, and consists of Application Services, Client Advancement Services, Academic and Immersive Technologies, Research Computing, and the Strategy and Transformation Office.
Prior to VCU, Tom spent 21 years at the University of Kansas, working in the central IT department in the roles of Associate Director of Strategy and Governance, Assistant Director of Project Management, IT Project Manager, and Manager of Public Computing Services.
Tom has a Master's Degree in Management & Leadership, and a Bachelor's Degree in English. He completed the EDUCAUSE Institute Management Program in 2007, the Emerging Leaders Academy in 2014 from the KU Public Management Center, and is a State of Kansas certified Project Manager.
With over 26 years in Information Technology and Higher Ed, Tom has collaborated with and assisted dozens of universities and institutions with developing IT strategies and services, setting up PMOs, consulting on IT Governance, and has presented at numerous national and regional conferences on IT topics.
Areas of career interest: Leadership, culture and environment, organizational analysis, mentoring, IT Governance and strategy, process improvement / efficiencies / automation, application rationalization, project management.
