Biography
W. Joseph (Joey) King is interim executive director of the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE) and senior advisor to the president of Emory & Henry College.
He previously served as NITLE's executive director and vice president for innovation at Southwestern University, helping almost 150 liberal arts colleges integrate inquiry, pedagogy, and technology. Prior to his tenure at NITLE, Dr. King was executive director of Connexions at Rice University. Connexions is a leading open education system with over one million unique visitors per month.
In addition to his work in higher education, Dr. King is a serial entrepreneur. He is a co-founder of Grifiti, a computer accessories company. He was president of Zama Networks, a quality of service network provider acquired by Mitsui & Co. He was also chief scientist of F5 Networks (FFIV, an S&P 500 company), which has become the industry leader in network traffic management. As a managing director of Trinity River Ventures, Dr. King financed and advised early stage robotics companies. He serves on the boards of directors of Grifiti and CE Analytics.
Dr. King served as the 2007 entrepreneur-in-residence at Tech Fort Worth. He also served as an adjunct professor at the TCU Neeley School of Business where he was nominated for the Most Inspiring Professor award. Formerly, he was a research scientist at the Human Interface Technology Laboratory at the University of Washington. He has also conducted research at the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute, Hughes Research Laboratories, and GTE Telecommunications Research. Dr. King has served as a consultant and advisor to Hanson Robotics, Rapport, Siemens ModViz, Hughes Electronics, Microsoft, Interval Research, Walt Disney Imagineering, and Atari Games.
Dr. King serves as chairman of the board of Teachers Without Borders, an organization devoted to teacher professional development on a global scale. He serves as treasurer on the board of directors of the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR); CLIR's mission is to expand access to information as a public good. He serves on the advisory board of the Theodore Roosevelt Center, creating a digital library for the 26th president. He also serves on the board of directors of Anvil Academic Publishing, a pioneering, exclusively digital scholarly publisher. Formerly, Dr. King served on the boards of Connexions, Rice University Press, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Southwestern University, Benaroya Research Institute, and the Pacific Northwest Ballet.
Dr. King holds a Ph.D. in human-computer interaction from the University of Washington (Seattle, Washington). He holds a B.A. with honors in computer science and in experimental psychology from Southwestern University (Georgetown, Texas).
