Ziad Akir is the Director of Distance Learning at Washington State Community College in Marietta, OH, where he manages and provides support on all aspects of online teaching and learning. He also participates in the strategic planning and policy development for distance learning programs quality assurance issues at WSCC. Ziad is WSCC representative in the Ohio Learning Partnership (OLP) in which WSCC is one of two community colleges in Ohio deploying rSmart Sakai CLE as an open-source learning management system. Ziad is the site administrator for the system and he is responsible for faculty development and support related to Sakai and other related educational technology systems. Before joining WSCC in March 2007, Ziad was an Instructional Technology Systems Manager within the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research (CITR) at Western Illinois University (WIU), Macomb, IL. Other posts that Ziad held include: Senior Leacturer, Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Lecturer, University Malaysia Sawarak, Kota Samarahan, Malaysia; and Network Consultant, PT NVPD Soedarpo Coorporation, Jakarta, Indonesia. Ziad hold a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, where he investigated the impact of information and communication technology systems on teaching and training from a pedagogical as well as organizational perspectives. He also hold an B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, also from Ohio University.
